For the next two hours, Selby talked, and Regin Agmund listened.

She spoke unsteadily at first, the words coming out disjointed and uncertain — but the longer Agmund listened, the easier it seemed to become. He asked questions in the right places, frowned in the right places, and for once Selby almost appreciated that he was such a suspicious and cranky bastard, with all his pissed-off force seemingly on her side for once.

“Ketill honestly told you that you were making the smell?” he demanded, once Selby had shared that particular point. “Why the hell didn’t you tell me? And why, for fuck’s sakes, would you make a smell that made you sick?”

“Because I feel guilty about what I’m doing?” Selby replied, giving a wan half-smile toward him, and in reply Agmund snorted, and rolled his eyes. “Typical Ketill bullshit,” he said flatly. “You love what you’re doing.”

He seemed very certain of that fact, suddenly, his eyes hard and steady on hers, as if daring her to deny it — but Selby wasn’t about to try, was already being betrayed by the heat pooling in her cheeks. “Well,” she said, and searched carefully for the next words. “Do you think, then — is there any chance Ketill might have anything to do with all this?”

Agmund’s head tilted, his forehead furrowed. “What do you mean.”

“Well,” Selby replied, slow, “on top of that particular bullshit, isn’t it a bit suspicious that he told me there’d be no problem, and brought me here anyway? When he knew full well that I could get called out for this?”

Agmund sighed, and his mouth had gone tight, his eyes grim. “Look, I hate to say this,” he began, “‘cause I’ve worked with Ketill for half my life — but even if he knew for sure you’d get called on this, he’d probably still have brought you here. That awful contract of yours doesn’t even hint at what your magic really does, right? Just tells you to keep quiet? And I guarantee you, that was on purpose. So if it ever came out, Ketill could say he knew nothing.”

He knew nothing. The nausea roiled in Selby’s gut again, after being so blessedly absent these past few hours, and she stared at Agmund, at the certainty in those blue eyes. “You’re serious?” she demanded. “Ketill would sacrifice me — my magic, my body, my life — just so you could get your magic back for a while?”

Agmund looked distinctly uncomfortable, but he gave a jerky shrug. “I’m the Coven’s best mage, right? They need me too much. The country needs me.”

Of course, the great Regin fucking Agmund was so utterly essential, worth so much more than a lowly replaceable pedlar, and the fury was shouting in Selby’s head now, drowning out everything else. “That is so much bullshit,” she snapped, as she rose abruptly to her feet, and paced across the clearing. “The government and the Coven are supposed to look after their people, not treat them like pawns in
